The following Speak Out! messages appear in August 31-September 1, 2022 editions of the Journal & Topics.

Des Plaines, keep aldermens’ term limits in place. We don’t need people trying to create their dynasties and special interests. Term limits need to be extended to Springfield and Washington, D.C.

So guess who will be paying for the college debt? You are correct: our great grandchildren. Crime is up, time for term limits, folks. Get it on the ballot. Vote the current people out of office.

I urge all Des Plaines voters to vote to keep term limits on our elected city officials. While we are on the subject, we should also have term limits on our Illinois House and Senate members as well as our governor. I also propose term limits for our U.S. House and Senate members. Many of these legislators on both the state and federal levels have held their positions for decades. This type of dominance fosters corruption and tends to keep stagnant policies in effect. New people with fresh new ideas elected by the voters in each district can be a very positive thing.

When is the Prospect Heights Post Office going to install a new outside drop station? After six months or so, going inside to send mail is ridiculous and people wonder why big government is inefficient and incompetent? Get the mail moving.

If Chicago excises Columbus statues and other politically incorrect historical figures based on something said or done 300 years ago, are any of us safe from our tyrannical politicians and leaders? Maybe the beloved Bears want out of big C for their sanity and the safety of Arlington Heights? Certainly will allow them control of facility and receive much more revenue from the concessions, parking and concerts and not have to deal with Chicago Park District ogres.

I see several people commenting in Speak Out on term limits. Lord Acton said, “absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Truer words were never spoken, just look at Pelosi, Schumer and the many other politicians on the left and right in the congress and senate and say it ain’t so Joe.

Always remember to do what makes you happy. Life is too short to be miserable. Continue to spread peace and love. Cheers to all.

I live just west of Lake Park and was at an opening of the playground and wonderful splash pad. My little ones love it, I spoke to a tall guy from the park district and he told me all that is going on at Lake Park and about a new pool coming. We already use the indoor pool, so wonderful. We are so happy for the park district and all they do, great job on the gathering and the splash pad is just a treat for my little ones, only problem is getting them to leave. Can’t wait for what comes next. We are so lucky to have Lake Park and the two new pools so close by. Just thankful.

Filming of “Chicago Fire” at the Pickwick in Park Ridge: Andy Rooney “do you ever wonder” moment: Do you ever wonder what would happen to all the stored popcorn in a theater fire? Do emergency responders (who are indeed awesome) specially train for such an event? Does such an event remind us of the Hindenburg clip, “Oh the humanity!” And do you ever wonder what they would put on a fire at the Alka-Seltzer plant?

The politicians in Des Plaines think we are idiots. Vote to keep term limits in place. If not we will be the next Chicago.

In regard to Graceland-Webford development, can people please stop creating conspiracy theories? About the latest two “conspiracies”: 1. Union Pacific letter that the city received on Aug. 1. This is clearly a form letter UP sends to communities around the country with developments near their rail lines. It’s only a list of recommendations (not requirements), and a way to cover their rear. 2. The $10 parking lot purchase. Here is my understanding: the original agreement was for the builder to purchase Journal & Topics buildings and city lot. One of the concerns and feedback from neighbors was to have a park or green space. The city went back to the builder and figured out how to make this happen. Instead of purchasing the city lot, the builder will now use those funds to purchase the Dance Building, and the city will now include the city lot as part of the purchase. In exchange, the builder agrees to build a park, at their expense, and provide parking spaces to replace the lot. This is part of the negotiation process, nothing out of the ordinary, nothing suspicious. The city gets parking and the neighbors get a park, something they asked for. The builder has also agreed to install new sewers on the block, pumps to alleviate water pressure concerns, and change the overall look of the building, concerns brought up by neighbors. This has resulted in a better plan, however, I think it is time to move on and stop trying to make this one big conspiracy.

Biden and his administration may be the biggest group of doofuses to ever run this country, now he eliminates college debt, nice gesture but the $10-20K debt relief for students who actually signed and pledged to pay back their loans, that is a good example of future freeloaders who expect everything for nothing. Make them join the military or peace corps or some charitable organization. And of course, the market crashed 1,500 points for this week. Especially good news for the retired living off their IRA and SSI. Another smart move by the dunce in Washington. But he gets a government-paid, by us of course, $500,000 fence built around his plush Delaware beach home. Oh, what a corrupt world we live in, say bye bye to the great American dream of our pie in the sky. It is all about greed and the elite who control and own the government. Somebody besides Trump needs to be investigated.

How much will the residents of Niles be assessed for the grammatical error correction on neighborhood signs cautioning that children live and play here? Referring to the addition of a comma between “Caution” and “Kids”. As a walker utilizing the Howard Street crossing, I have observed that walkers, joggers, and bikers disregard the use of activating the flashing lights for safe passage. Even with the lights activated there are motorists who ignore the courtesy. Thank you.

All I want to do is Speak Out, but there is nobody there to take the information. Hello, hello. Who am I speaking to? I can barely hear you. Hello. Is there someone there from the Journal? What is your name?

Returning to what recession? The writer says with numbers like these that we are in a recession, like some want to claim. I think the writer ought to do her/his homework first. The U6 real unemployment includes the underemployed, the marginal attached and discouraged worker, that works higher than the U3 and if you look at the U3, that might be low, but the U6 was 6.7 in June. It was a vast improvement, of course. Then they go on to say that the jobs report succeeded in expectations. These weren’t jobs created. These were jobs shut down for the pandemic and have now been reopened. Good luck with saying that the recession isn’t here.

Hi, hopefully this is Speak Out. I’m calling in reference to the headline, “Iroquois Pool DP Staple Set To Close.” It says maintenance issues are ongoing. I think it’s more about a personnel issue, people, administration because…I was just out in Colorado visiting the Hot Springs lodge and pool. It’s been around since the late 1800s and they maintain their facility and it’s open until this day with proper maintenance and care. There’s no reason why Iroquois pool can’t be maintained. Like I said, it’s probably a people issue. When they talk about building a new pool over at South Park or Arndt Park they will probably build a splash pad, no diving board. It would be nice to see a diving board and some other good facilities.

Speaking as a retired law enforcement officer with 23 years of experience, I can say that making an arrest off duty can be hazardous to your career. Having made only one felony arrest which was a stolen auto, it felt like hours until the army arrived. Let’s be careful before we judge. Thank you.
